Crossman Ecology was founded by Alex Crossman in 2008 with a simple belief: ecological consultancy can protect the natural environment while also helping people deliver successful projects.

Those two objectives do not always have to compete.

Sometimes ecology creates genuine constraints that need to be respected. Sometimes relatively small changes can avoid those constraints altogether. And sometimes ecological requirements can create opportunities for better landscapes, better places and better outcomes for nature.

Our job is to understand the evidence, explain what really matters and help our clients find a practical route forward.

Our ecological surveys, assessments and recommendations need to be accurate, robust and capable of standing up to scrutiny.

We therefore care enormously about the detail.

But once we understand the ecological position, our thinking moves beyond simply identifying the constraint.

We ask: What does this actually mean for the project? What are the options? Is there a simpler solution? Can the impact be avoided? Can the design respond differently? And how do we achieve the ecological outcome without creating unnecessary complexity?

Successful projects depend on architects, planners, developers, landscape architects, engineers, contractors, ecologists and regulators being able to work together.

That’s why we invest in relationships.

We want to understand our clients and become a trusted part of their project teams. We also work hard to develop constructive professional relationships with Local Planning Authority ecologists and other ecological advisers.

Those relationships never replace robust evidence or professional independence. But good professional dialogue can help people understand each other’s concerns, explore solutions and resolve ecological issues more effectively.
